Bibles
The Bible is at the center of all initiatives undertaken at Virtual Storehouse. It continues to be the best-selling book in the world, yet there are still so many that do not have access to the Bible or scripture resources in their own language. As a result, we have identified barriers and developed solutions in order to proceed toward our goal of providing scripture to all people, when they need it, where they need it, and in their native language.
Barriers
- Commercial software is not available to address the layout and typesetting requirements specific to Bibles without resulting in significant manual effort and software customization.
- Commercial software has limited support for minority languages.
- The cost of commercial typesetting software is prohibitive for many parts of the world.
- The cost to create and maintain typesetting software solely for Bible Society use is prohibitive.
- Corrections made to text in a version or translation is only made to the publish edition; archival files are not changed.
- Minimum print run requirements eliminate the ability to publish many minority languages.
Software Solutions
- Typesetting software developed for Bibles that automatically flows lay-out when changes are made.
- Changes are captured and saved to the archived file.
- Intuitive interface means little or no learning curve for translators, editors, publishers.
- Ability to create diglots using any two languages/translations.
- Ability to integrate scripture text [with permissions] with learning, Bible studies, dictionaries, reference materials...
- Re-purpose scripture [with permissions] for delivery via print, web, cell phone and PDA
In addition, other delivery solutions related to scripture and other texts have been developed in conjunction with one of our strategic partners, Snowfall Press.
